Practical management of Lisfranc injuries in athletes.

چکیده
Foot injuries are common in athletes. Injuries to the midfoot and, particularly, the Lisfranc joint are less common, but they have a high risk of ending the athlete's season or even career. Lisfranc injuries can be difficult to diagnose, and they often lead to a disastrous outcome when missed. Weight-bearing radiographs of the foot are recommended to confirm the diagnosis, although advanced imaging also may be required. Lisfranc injuries with less than 2 mm of diastasis on weight-bearing radiographs can be treated without weight bearing in a short leg cast or a walking boot for 6 weeks. Lisfranc injuries with more significant displacement or instability require operative intervention. Physicians who evaluate athletic injuries should be vigilant not to miss these injuries. Familiarity with the subtle clinical signs of a Lisfranc injury and knowledge of the basic treatment algorithm will help clinicians manage these injuries successfully.

Tarsometatarsal joint dislocations and fracture-dislocations are uncommon injuries most frequently resulting from high-energy trauma as encountered in crush injuries, falls, and motor vehicle accidents. Although less common in athletes, this injury is being recognized with greater frequency and may carry a poor prognosis for return to high levels of competition. These injuries present a conside...
متن کاملManagement of common sports-related injuries about the foot and ankle.
Foot and ankle injuries are commonplace in competitive sports. Improvements in injury surveillance programs and injury reporting have enabled physicians to better recognize and manage specific foot and ankle injuries, with a primary goal of efficient and safe return to play. Athletes are becoming stronger, faster, and better conditioned, and higher-energy injuries are becoming increasingly comm...
متن کاملTreatment of Lisfranc Injuries in the Athlete
Lisfranc injuries in the athlete can be challenging problems for the treating physician. The injury pattern can range from the very subtle ligament tear with diastasis to complicated fracture–dislocations. Proper treatment requires careful examination and use of imaging studies. Patients exhibiting fractures with displacement or subluxation generally require operative fixation because restorati...

Ligamentous injury of the tarsometatarsal joint complex is an uncommon, but disabling condition that frequently occurs in elite athletes. There are few options for managing these injuries, in part because the relative mechanical contribution of the ligaments of the tarsometatarsal joint is unknown, complicating decisions regarding which ligaments need reconstruction. In the current study, stren...
